This is a high quality reproduction concert poster for the Mar 6 1972 Bob Wills Birthday Tribute Concert with Bob and the Texas Playboys with Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Tex Ritter, Roy Acuff and many others in Fort Worth at the Tarrant County Convention Center.
Considered by music authorities as the founder of Western Swing, Bob's legacy hardly needs mentioning. The Country Music Hall of Fame inducted Wills in 1968 and the Texas State Legislature honored him for his contribution to American music. Wills was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Early Influence category along with the Texas Playboys in 1999, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Wills' style influenced Merle Haggard and helped to spawn a style of music now known as the Bakersfield Sound. (Bakersfield, California was one of Wills' regular stops in his heyday). A 1970 tribute album by Haggard directed a wider audience to Wills' music, as did the growing popularity of longtime Wills disciple and fan Willie Nelson. This poster is for one of the few shows Bob was able to do after he recovered sufficiently from his 1969 stroke to travel occasionally and appear at tribute concerts. This concert was originally conceived as a tribute and birthday party and grew into one of the biggest shows of the year.
